Escape the city and experience one of Kenya’s most rewarding hiking adventures with a day trip to Mount Longonot National Park, located approximately 68 km from Nairobi. Rising to 2,780 metres (9,120 ft) above sea level, Mount Longonot is a dormant stratovolcano renowned for its dramatic crater, lush vegetation, and breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley.
The mountain’s expansive crater is lined with small indigenous trees and scattered volcanic steam vents, offering hikers a unique glimpse into the area’s volcanic past. Its close proximity to Nairobi and affordable park entry fees make it one of Kenya’s most popular day-hiking destinations.
The hike typically takes 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace and fitness level. The trail from the park gate to the crater rim covers 3.1 km, featuring a steep but rewarding ascent. Adventurous hikers can continue around the crater rim, adding another 7.2 km to the trek. While rest points are available along the route, sections of the rim are narrow and involve steep inclines, making the full 10.3 km circuit both exciting and physically rewarding.
